Big news from current and former Girls members: Chris Owens and Chet White will be teaming up with a new guitarist (John Anderson) and drummer (Darren Weiss) for the release of a new record, titled Father, Son, Holy Ghost and released September 13, 2025 on TPS — the second album and third record following the widely-acclaimed Broken Dreams Club EP release.

So it seems to mark the end of the Ryan Lynch era, with the surging popularity of his side-project-turned-main-project Dominant Legs swallowing up his creative attention (Dominant Legs premiered a new song today on Stereogum — listen to “Hoop of Love” here).

On September 13th, 2011 San Francisco’s Girls will release their second album and third record Father, Son, Holy Ghost on True Panther Sounds and Turnstile in the UK/Europe. The album comes two years after their debut (Album), and one year after the follow-up EP (Broken Dreams Club).

On the third anniversary of the birth of Girls as a band Christopher Owens and Chet White found themselves entering the studio to begin recording their second album. More a collection of gear than a studio, recording took place in the bowels of a San Francisco office building. The two teamed up with new drummer Darren Weiss and guitarist John Anderson assembling performances and ultimately creating new music and musical relationships to carry the band through its newest incarnation.

Girls have taken what they’ve always done best and have displayed it with amazing clarity and the strongest of intent. Classic songwriting coupled with exciting production is their way. “I’m still all the same,” Owens says. “I still know I have to do it. I still love the songs and writing songs.”

Father. Son, Holy Ghost is at times ebullient and at times absolutely devastating. A truly beautiful record and the perfect amalgamation of a band’s past and present while most importantly leaving us all excited and hungry for their future.

We’re pretty excited to say that this year’s Woodsist Festival is almost a month away, with a lineup that is representative of some of the biggest influences behind this blog, including Nodzzz, Thee Oh Sees, and our second-favorite LA/SF transplant, White Fence. This year’s fest is split up into two days, with performances on Saturday night (Fernwood) and Sunday afternoon (Henry Miller). The lineup is rounded out by Art Museums, Ducktails, Woods/Fresh and Onlys Big Band on Saturday night; and Real Estate, Fresh and Onlys, Woods, Sic Alps, and Sun Araw on Sunday.

Coming off a 3-song 7″ release in late May (Bandcamp download comes with an extra track) and a stacked Slumberland Records showcase event at Rickshaw during this year’s SF Popfest. Sadly, the Art Museums are no longer in existence, but the Mantles have taken their place on the roster.

Big year for the side-project of Real Estate member Matthew Mondanile: he’s started a new label (listen to a track from the first release here, due out June 25), and Domino Records has picked up both RE and Ducktails.

If you can’t make it to the great Woodsist Fest this year, all is not lost. The Independent plays host to Woods, Fresh & Onlys, and The Mantles July 29th. Real Estate, together with San Francisco dream-pop acts Melted Toys and Dominant Legs (who just recorded a split 7″), also play at the Independent a few days after the fest on August 2nd.
